The Hoyas took on Gonzaga in their second game of the season this Friday. The Hoya’s offense came out strong scoring the first goal of the game after less than five minutes of playing time on a goal from sophomore Conner McMahon off an assist from cousin, sophomore Patrick Fitzgerald. The Hoya’s scored again in the first period on an unassisted breakout form senior James Flannery to put the Hoyas up 2-0, despite a strong offensive presence from Gonzaga. The second period was scoreless for both teams, despite a considerable amount of time in the penalty box for both sides. Prep had an opportunity to further their lead when Gonzaga went down a man with a 5 minute major penalty, but the Hoyas were unable to capitalize with two penalties of their own towards the latter half of Gonzaga’s major. The third period saw aggressive play from both sides, with Gonzaga and Prep both making numerous offensive drives, but the Hoyas would finish up the game with an empty net goal from Patrick Fitzgerald within the final minutes of the game to put the nail in the coffin for Gonzaga. Preps victory can be largely attributed to Junior goalie Elon Granston blocking 30 shots from Gonzaga, letting none in and propelling the Hoyas to victory. Hoya Saxa!
